Reynolds History

In these days of faceless multinational it is becoming increasingly rare to deal with a family owned and run company. Whether it be a restaurant, a hotel or a furniture store family run is likely to mean a more personal approach, flexibility in the types of services available as well as higher standards of customer care.

Reynolds boasts a successful track record in business in the community. Founded in 1867 by Samuel Reynolds a well-known and respected cabinetmaker the business has grown to be the largest furniture and floor-covering store in Sussex.

Samuel Reynolds founded Reynolds in 1867. The business started in West Street, Bognor Regis and
moved to a bow fronted shop at 29 High Street in 1870. Reynolds has traded in Bognor Regis ever since.

The business was first advertised as Auctioneers, Appraisers, and House Agents, Cabinetmakers
Upholsterers and Undertakers. Samuel also dealt in furniture with a special line in baths.

In 1885 the firm moved to larger premises at 27 High Street and number 29 was let on a long lease.
At the end of the lease the premises were used as additional space.

Samuel died on 17 th April 1897 and his two sons Frank and Charles and his two daughters Beatrice and
Maud carried on the advancement.

1900 saw the smaller shop rebuilt and in 1905 the two shops were linked followed in 1908 by the matching up of the premises. In the 1920’s a new shop front was installed in the art deco style including neon signs. Fancy plaster ceilings from the original Regency building

n 1953 another adjacent building was acquired ( 31 High Street) and this became the Estate Office.
In 1963 this shop was demolished and a new Estate Office, Funeral Premises and Furniture Showrooms were built.

During the 1960’s the shop was modernised. The shop front you can see today was built in 1967 and new display aids introduced.

1989 saw the closure of the Estate Office and the frontage was rebuilt and the premises used to extend the expanding Funeral Department.

Reynolds joined Associated Independent Stores, the largest buying group for independent retailers in the UK, in 1992 giving the store increased buying power. In 1996 the store was refurbished

In 1998 an extension over the funeral department provided a further 6,000 sq ft of showroom space bringing the total selling to nearly 23,000 making Reynolds the largest furniture store in Sussex.

Service, quality and value for money still form the heart of the business. Well known brands such as G-Plan, Skovby, Ekornes’ Stressless, Relyon, Dunlopillo, Axminster, Pergo, and a host of others form the basis of Reynolds stock offering.
